There is ice to climb in Kansas, if the weather is just right. It takes good ground mosture followed by at least a week of cloudy continous sub freezing weather.
Saturday, Janurary 9, 2010, the drip waterfall on the Elk River Hiking Trail had a climbable ice formation. The fall is about 20 feet tall. It needed about another week to fully form and is melting now.
Bill Barnett, JD and Tony had the first ascent of Flatrock Cherry. it was short, but it was real ice climbing in Kansas.
For ice climbing in Kansas wait for about two weeks of 0 to 10 degree weather and find the waterfall two miles from the Elk City trailhead. There is closer access on a dirt road.
